At the lower corner of the field lies a hollow, flat, its bottom smooth. The ground curves toward it, the blades lie with their tips toward the hollow. The near edge is a smooth lip, turned toward a far rim. Between the two lies a broad shadow in the shape of a mountain range: dark on the ground, no stone in it, no footbridge over it. The far rim is bright, its edge closed like a wall. Lip and wall are turned toward each other. The shadow between them is untrodden.

Where a surface of ice meets open water, a channel has broken open, the ice at its edges thin and wet. The water in the channel is clear and runs out of the frame without turning back. A hand lies at the edge of the ice, wet, open, the fingers do not follow the water. The gaze is directed at the hand, not at the place where the channel leaves the frame. ### The Little Grain

But there is always a tiny tremor. The grain of sand in the perfect mechanism — so small that everything looks complete, so hard that it stays when everything else goes along. The water runs around it and has its edge on it. It is the gentle reminder that this is a moment in flow, not a finished lake.
